Annual Reports
Check out Algalita's Annual Reports for information about our projects and finances. Each annual report details the previous year's activities and financial statements.
2009
During the summer of 2009, Captain Moore marked the tenth anniversary of ORV Alguita's first expedition to the "great Pacific garbage patch" with a return voyage to that primary point of plastic debris accumulation in the NPSG.
2009 also marked the final phase and conclusion of Algalita's Kelp Reforestation Project. Our foundation is pleased to report significant results in our reforestation efforts - most notably, the area between Pelican Point and Little Corona Beach, where plants have merged to form a continuous half-mile long kelp bed along the coast.
Education highlights include JUNKride, The Ship-2-Shore Education Program, The Watershed Wonders School Tour, and the launch of Algalita's first International Youth Summit!
2008
Research highlights include a resampling within the same parameters as the 1999 voyage. Lantern fish were collected to have their stomach contents analyzed. Education highlights include the voyage of JUNKraft, the continuation of Ship-2-Shore, and the continuation of the Watershed Wonders school tour. Restoration highlights included the continuation and expansion of our Kelp Reforestation Project.
2007
2007 was a watershed year. The media began to pay attention and word got out: plastic debris not only is killing the ocean and creatures that depend on it for life, but has the potential to kill us as well.
Research highlights included the establishment of a microplastic study at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Laboratory, the continuing analysis of Midway Island albatross boluses at the S.E.A. Laboratory, and the analysis of 10 samples from post-Katrina Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico waters.
Education highlights included the Spanish translation of Synthetic Sea: Plastics in the Open Ocean, the rise of the Green Ambassadors, the continuation of our Plastics are Forever program, the distribution of our Watershed Wonders curriculum book and DVD series, the introduction of Ship-2-Shore, and Dr. Marcus Eriksen's 100th presentation of our Watershed Wonders program.
The progress of the Kelp Restoration Projects on the Long Beach section of the San Pedro Breakwater and Orange County Crystal Cove State Park is highlighted.
2006
In 2006, AMRI organized Watershed Expo, a community education event to inform the public about the importance of clean watersheds to the health of the oceans and to human health.
Our research focused on the analysis of samples from a variety of sources and the attempt to understand the biological impact of plastic on marine organisms.
Education highlights for the year included visiting fifty high schools to communicate the impact of plastic on our watersheds and oceans, the continuation of our Plastics are Forever program, and the departure of Fluke on a 250-mile journey down the California coast.
2005
2005 saw AMRI complete the three-year study, Assessing and Reducing Sources of Plastic and Trash in Urban and Coastal Waters, also referred to as Plastic Debris: Rivers to Sea, for the California State Water Resources Control Board. Additional research highlights include Pelagic Plastics: Our Synthetic Sea, our fourth voyage to the Central Pacific Gyre, NOAA Satellite Tracking Devices, and Sorption Studies.
Education highlights include: Our Synthetic Sea, Portals to the Sea, the Watershed Wonders Series, Plastics are Forever, and education on the web.
