Research - Pelagic Plastic - 2007 Gyre Voyage

2007 Gyre Voyage

The ORV Aguilta will depart for the North Central Pacific gyre on her 5th gyre voyage on Sunday, September 9th.  New motors have been installed, along with a solar array for deploying research gear and conducting studies without the use of an engine.  At this time ORV Alguita is the first known solar operated research vessel!

The crew will consist of Captain Charles Moore, Dr. Lorena Rios, Joe Goodman, as well as a film crew from VBS.TV.   After the Gyre sampling Captain Moore and the Alguita will end up at the University of Hawaii, Hilo where he participate in a marine debris lecture series in hopes to help the University establish a course, and eventually a degree program, in Pacific Marine Debris.

In ORV’s absence, AMRF will be conducting research to see if plastic dust (a new industrial plastic-molding feedstock) is consumed by zooplankton.
