Ship-2-Shore Online Education Program

The Ship-2-Shore Education Program links students from around the world with the research being performed at sea aboard Oceanographic Research Vessel Alguita. Utilizing the research vessel's satellite communication system, this program allows students to follow daily updates from ORV Alguita's research crew, as well as to interact directly with the crew by sending questions and comments to the research vessel. Supplementary resources and lesson plans are provided for teachers to enhance their student's learning experience.

The Ship to Shore Education Blog is a moderated web space for students, educators, and the ORV Alguita crew to share questions, answers, and ideas about ORV Alguita's voyage. This blog is in operation when ORV Alguita is at sea, so come visit, see what our research team is working, ask questions, share your thoughts and learn!

This website provides a tour of the Oceanographic Research Vessel Alguita, and background on the research crew. Included on this site are many lessons and activities as well as links to other educational resources. Lessons are found under the heading "Educational Resources" and are arranged by topic. Many lessons are provided as printable PDFs. We will be making suggestions about how to incorporate these lessons into your curriculum throughout the voyage. While at sea, the crew aboard Oceanographic Research Vessel Alguita share their experiences through daily descriptions and pictures. Now you can view several of these research voyages in Google Maps. Click on the sailboat icons to open the description for each day.


Mapping Plastic Marine Pollution: Lessons for Grades 4-12

This Educator's Guide provides lessons that allow students to explore plastic pollution research in the North Pacific Ocean using free Google Earth software. Here is a great way to get started:

1) On the Ship-2-Shore blog read the brief background about 2009 summer voyage 1 "Background- Pacific Gyre Expedition 2009 Voyage #1" and 2009 summer voyage 2 "Summer 2009 Voyage #2 Background".

2) On the Ship-2-Shore website read the "Meet the Crew" section to learn about each crew member, their interests, and how they got involved in the marine sciences.

3) On the Ship-2-Shore blog make a comment or ask a question of the ship's crew. Be sure to follow the guidelines provided on the comment page. Questions and comments can be addressed to individual crew members or the crew in general.
