MIB Phase III: JUNKride 2009

Raising Awareness: Two bikes, 2000 miles

Junk Ride 2009 logoThe JUNKride is Phase III of Algalita’s Message in a Bottle (MIB) project.  MIB began with Phase I, Algalita’s February 2008 research voyage into the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) to investigate plastic pollution.  Phase II followed in summer 2008 with the voyage of the JUNK raft, an awareness campaign in which 2 crew-members drifted across the Pacific from Long Beach, CA to Hawaii on a raft of 15,000 plastic bottles.

Now Algaita’s education team will move forward in their efforts to educate the public about marine debris through JUNKride.  Traveling by bicycle, Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins will make their way from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico.  Along the 2000 mile coastal route samples of plastic debris collected from the NPSG will be given to legislators, educators and organizations-- sharing Algalita’s research and education programs with 1000's of people.  The 10 week cycling/speaking tour will begin on April 4th and ended on June 25th 2009.
