Restoration - Kelp Restoration
Kelp Restoration Overview
Upon receipt of the “Equilon Pollution fine money” from the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation, Gordon Lehman of Coastal Marine Technologies researched the restoration of the endangered Giant Kelp beds off the Southern California Coast;
Over the course of several years, Mr. Lehman, with the help of Cliff Noland, implemented a kelp sporing process outside the laboratory. By 2009, they had experienced significant success in the reforestation of kelp beds in three Southern California coastal locations, including at the Long Beach breakwater. Their project and final results are detailed in a lengthy report, available below, including many photos documenting their progress.
