This South Atlantic Gyre expedition is one of five spanning all the world's major subtropical gyres. The 5 Gyres project is a partnership between Algalita and 5 Gyres Institute in association with Pangaea Exploration. Algalita is the research arm of the project.
The expedition will depart from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and sail to Cape Town, South Africa, creating a
transect through the South Atlantic Gyre.

Here are the objectives for the upcoming 29-day expedition from Rio de Janiero, Brazil to Cape Town, South Africa aboard the Sea Dragon (pictured right):
1. Compare the performance of three trawl designs. (max efficient speed, stability and consistency at capturing sea surface)
2. Conduct two surface tows each day using the manta trawl. ( target is 50 samples)
3. Collect fish for POPs analysis using hi-speed trawl at night.
4. Collect samples of plastic marine pollution for POPs analysis.
All of the samples that are collected will be analyzed by Algalita and the data and research will be published under our name.
“What about the other gyres?"
"What about the other gyres?" is a common question asked when discussing plastic marine debris. There are five subtropical gyres in the world. We have recent data from only one: the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Seeking to answer further questions about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, Algalita Marine Research Foundation has traveled across the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre on multiple expeditions in a
decade of research.
